Aquarium Furniture
I remember the first time I heard the term “aquarium furniture”, I was thinking of tables and such that had been turned into aquariums.
Those things do exist – heck, even Walmart sells coffee table and end table aquariums now.
However, in this article we’ll focus on what’s typically meant, fish tank stands, cabinets, glass tops, and canopies.
When You Need One?
Fish tanks are heavy. The general rule of thumb is to figure 8 pounds per gallon of water. That means a 75 gallon tank would weigh about 600 pounds.
Your regular run of the mill table or stand isn’t designed to support that kind of weight.
In fact, for anything larger than 20 gallons, you’re going to want to go with a dedicated fish tank stand.
Choices
If you’re on a budget but still need a stand, your best bet is going to be a metal stand. They’re plenty strong and will do their job just fine, but in my opinion, they’re sterile looking… not what you want holding your fish tank.
Most people prefer wood fish stands and canopies. Some of the most popular choices of wood are oak, maple, pine, cherry (my favorite), as well as more exotic (and more expensive) choices that can be custom built to your needs.
Where To Buy
Just about every places that sells aquariums will also sell stands to go along with them. Large pet stores like Petco and Petsmart have them… even Walmart has some although their stands tend to be on the cheap side.
If you’re looking for higher end or custom aquarium furniture, then companies like Oceanic Systems, Aquatic Fundamentals and Perfecto Manufacturing are worth looking into.
